CHARLIE MacDonald has been backed to be a big hit at Athletic — by former teammate Robbie Simpson, who played in the same Brentford side as the wily striker in the 2010-11 season.

Simpson says MacDonald’s prowess in front of goal is matched by a crowd-pleasing work ethic.

The former Latics striker was straight on the phone to his former teammate when he found out about the deal.

“A couple of weeks before he signed I was speaking with Charlie,” said Simpson, who left Boundary Park at the end of last season. “We were both in a similar situation, talking about clubs in general.

“It was a bit of a shock when I found out he had signed for Oldham! I think it will turn out to be a great signing.

“He knows League One inside out and it has been proven time and again that he scores goals at this level. He is exactly the kind of player I think Oldham were looking for. I think he he the potential to strike up a great partnership with Jose Baxter.”

MacDonald (32) will be the elder statesman of Athletic’s squad, 14 months older than Cliff Byrne.

“It is a young dressing room but he has the sense of humour to get on with everyone,” Simpson added.

“I know he will be a big hit with the fans as well. He works his socks off.”

Simpson himself is ready to hit the ground running when a suitable offer comes up.

“Clubs are taking their time this summer,” he said. “There isn’t a lot of activity. I am keeping myself fit so that when a club comes along, I am ready to go.”
