Philliskirk’s shock at special award

TONY Philliskirk admitted he was left “gobsmacked” after being presented with a prize at the onefuture Oldham Sports Awards.

Athletic’s head of youth picked up a ‘Special Recognition for Service to Sport’ towards the end of the event at the Queen Elizabeth Hall.

It was recognition for the 15 years of service Philliskirk has put in at Boundary Park, where as well as bringing through a host of young players he has also held fort as caretaker manager — no more notably than last season.

Though other members of Athletic’s staff were present at the event, nobody let slip to Philliskirk that he was in line for an award, leaving him as the most surprised man in the room when called up to the stage.

“To say I was gobsmacked is putting it mildly,” said Philliskirk (48). “I am also very grateful and very proud.

“I have always just worked my hardest and done my best. I am in my 16th year with the club and it is definitely a massive part of my life.

“I am originally from the North-East, but I am an Oldham man now.”
