No sleep lost over Latics exodus

Date published: 09 August 2013

EVERY Friday we’ll feature the views of Latics supporters on the club’s progress. Kicking off is Athletic fan JOE ROBINSON, who reflects on the changes at Boundary Park.

IT DOESN’T seem too long ago that I nearly had heart failure at the Bury and Yeovil matches towards the back end of last season.

The 2012-13 campaign will always be remembered for Latics’ astounding FA Cup run, when Nottingham Forest and then Liverpool were easily nudged aside before two pulsating encounters against Everton.

I am not sure any Latics fans will want to remember this, but the week after Oldham’s historic upset over Liverpool, they went down with barely a whimper against the mighty Walsall.

This brought the question do our players care about the league? Or do they only care about putting themselves in the shop window in the FA Cup?

I’m sure the latter wasn’t the case - but I for one didn’t lose any sleep over the mass clear-out in the summer.

As Paul Dickov stepped aside in came Lee Johnson, the youngest manager in the country. With him, he has brought charisma, a feelgood factor and a brand of attacking football Latics fans haven’t seen for a long time.

He has bought intelligently, bringing in young, hungry and exciting prospects alongside the experience of journeyman striker Charlie McDonald.

Johnson aspires to attractive football, something we have not seen much of in recent years, and I for one am a big believer in playing football where it should be — on the floor.

If the opening day is anything to go by, we are all in for a topsy-turvy ride, so strap yourselves in and prepare for the rollercoaster that is being a supporter of Oldham Athletic!
