Tension at the turnstiles

Pressing matters:

QUIZ time, Athletic fans. What have these clubs got in common - Arsenal, Aston Villa, Fulham, Manchester City, Newcastle, Queen’s Park Rangers, Stoke, Sunderland, West Brom, Wigan?

The answer is that last season you could at times watch any of these clubs in action for less than it will cost Athletic supporters to pay on the day at Peterborough on Saturday.

Santi Cazorla, Christian Benteke, Dimitar Berbatov, Yaya Toure, Yohan Cabaye, Loic Remy, Romelu Lukaku; all could have been worshipped, with change to spare, compared to the game at London Road this weekend.

I’m not entirely sure Posh’s star man Lee Tomlin — a class act, admittedly — is in the same bracket as these - or indeed Europe-based heroes Lionel Messi, Franck Ribery, Radamel Falcao and Robert Lewandowski, all of whom were also cheaper to see last season at one point than Peterborough’s finest this time.

Turn up on a whim on Saturday and it will cost you £28. The club, which has come under fire from Athletic fans on social media, is offering tickets for £25 in advance (that too still pricier than four of the Premier League clubs above).

Advance admission for £25 is commonplace in League One, but Peterborough’s headline day-rate rate brings into focus that League One football is often overpriced.

To Athletic’s credit, admission to Boundary Park for travelling fans is a relatively reasonable £20.

Perhaps it is time for the Football League to impose a similar limit at every ground in the division.
