PORT Vale won’t approach their task at Boundary Park with any sense of trepidation.
Micky Adams’ men may have lost their first away-day fixture back in Sky Bet League One, 1-0 at Colchester. But Adams admitted he fielded the wrong line-up.
Vale’s defeat and perceived lack of energy was particularly annoying for Adams, who takes pride in his teams’ fitness.
The team responded to a hard week on the training ground by seeing off another promoted team, Bradford City, 2-1. It means the club arrives for Saturday’s Oldham game with confidence.
Athletic old boy Lee Hughes also played a big role in helping Vale land an automatic spot last season with 10 goals in 13 starts.
Right-back Adam Yates is aware Athletic need a home victory - but believes Vale will relish the task of stopping them.
“We will put them under real pressure. If we win the game so be it, but if we don’t let’s make sure we have worked hard, so there can be no question about our enthusiasm.”
