SIDNEY SCHMELTZ : looking forward to tonight’s challenge.
ATHLETIC’S flying Dutchman Sidney Schmeltz thrives on pressure - so he is desperate to get the call from manager Lee Johnson to play at Preston tonight.
Schmeltz (24) joined Athletic during the summer on a two-year deal as a free agent. His dazzling skills have delighted the Athletic faithful, and last Tuesday he played what his new boss described as his best game so far with a terrific cup goal at Shrewsbury.
Schmeltz is now desperate to feature in the Lancashire hotpot at Deepdale: “I’ve played derbies back home in Holland, but I do think there is more pressure on these games over here.
“It’s pressure for me in a good way, though. It’s a first time and I don’t really know what to expect, but I am looking forward to it very much.”
Schmeltz won’ be fazed by the presence of TV cameras. He played for a TV audience many times with previous clubs Sparta Rotterdam, Willem II Tilburg and Veendam.
“I just prepare myself the same way for every game. There’s no extra pressure. I’m confident,
particularly after scoring my first goal at Shrewsbury. I can see how League One works and I’ve got a good feeling about it now.”
