Paul Murray: wants players to have a go

ATHLETIC coach Paul Murray wants more players to follow the lead of Carl Winchester - by taking the initiative and making things happen.

Winchester’s rifle-shot against Swindon lit up Boundary Park on Saturday, bringing to their feet those around the ground who didn’t care for the tight, tactical contest that had until then done little to set hearts racing.

It was the sort of brilliant individual goal that arrives rarely in a player’s career.

Murray wants his players to be similarly aggressive in taking the initiative.

“The good thing about Winch was that he had the bottle to go for it’,” said Murray. “It was really good from him. We want more players to do that.”

Preparatory work for tonight’s clash at Notts County has been made more difficult, he admitted, now development squad manager Steve Hodge is in caretaker charge following Chris Kiwomya’s departure on Sunday.

“New managers like Steve Hodge tend to bring in a few faces who haven’t been playing,” Murray said.

“It is a massive game for us. They have got some good players. It will be tough and there will be a reaction, no doubt. But we are looking to get three points.”

A victory tonight will lift Athletic to 13th in the division.
