Young guns’ penalty shoot-out heartache

ATHLETIC 2, SHEFFIELD UNITED 2 (Sheffield win 4-3 on penalties)
TONY Philliskirk was a proud man despite Athletic slipping to a shoot-out defeat in the first round of the FA Youth Cup at Boundary Park.
Ryan Ellison and George Edmundson saw their penalties saved by outstanding Blades ’keeper Jake Eastwood.
It was anything but an easy ride for the visitors, though. Striker Jordan Bove netted twice for Athletic, the first from the spot, to help take the game into extra-time - during which United’s two-goal hero Otis Khan was sent off.
Athletic more than did themselves justice in an entertaining contest.
“It was a sad way to lose but someone has to,” said Philliskirk. “I am very proud of the lads. We gave a good account of ourselves. “If you look at the fact that 10 of the 16 can play in the competition next year, it bodes well for the future.”
