Dayton’s right move

A SWITCH of wings paid dividends on Saturday for Athletic wide man James Dayton, who fired home his second goal of the season to earn Athletic valuable point.

Dayton cut in from the right flank to net with his left foot, having earlier lashed an effort narrowly wide from further out.

But the former Kilmarnock player was left with mixed emotions as he felt Athletic were deserving of more ahead of Saturday’s home FA Cup, first-round tie against Wolves (3pm kick-off).

“The biggest thing was the relief of getting a point even though, for me, we deserved to get three,” said Dayton (24), who has started in all but one of Athletic’s league games this season.

“In the first half we created a lot of chances and pegged back Bristol City. We just couldn’t stick the ball in the back of the net. In the second half, we were still on top for the majority of it.”

On the prospect of facing Wolves, the Londoner is positive despite the experience of being beaten 2-0 at Molineux only two weeks ago.

Dayton added: “It is a big game and they are a tough side as we know from having played them already this season. It will be a major test, but hopefully it is one we can overcome.”

The Athletic winger’s length-of-field effort at Stevenage has been nominated alongside Sergio Aguero, Robin van Persie, Daniel Sturridge, Leighton Baines and Danny Ings, with the winner decided by a vote at the host venue, Lancashire CCC.
