The Latics star writes every week for Chron Sport
IT HAS been an emotional week on both a professional and personal level, one that has seen me go from low to high - and back to my lowest point again.

It all started last week when I heard I had a tear in my thigh and would be out of action for up to six weeks. That was hard to take, especially since i try to look after my body.

I sat down with our physio, Jon Guy, to discuss the rehabilitation plan. He explained it would be good to have a guided injection into the tear under ultrasound to promote healing. Arriving for the pocedure I was buoyed that the ultrasound showed the injury was making good progress naturally and didn’t need help. A much-needed boost.

Back on the pitch, our performance against Mansfield was unexpected: very flat, with very little creativity - though credit must go to the opposition for doing their homework and having a game plan to frustrate our style.

It took a wonder goal from Korey Smith to break the deadlock - one anyone will be hard-pressed to beat for the best of the season at Boundary Park.

But again we were pegged back by a deflected effort. But the positive thing was that we are still unbeaten - and in the hat for the big draw.

On Tuesday we were knocked out of the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy on penalties by Chesterfield, which was very hard to swallow because we should have been awarded a spot-kick in injury time for a blatant handball.

Once a game goes to penalties it is a lottery. We must make sure it doesn’t have a knock-on effect in the important fixtures coming up.

But more personal bad news was still to come. In the early hours of Wednesday I heard my nan had passed away. I visited her only last week and was devastated by the news. She was a fantastic person, so kind, with so much love and affection.

But life goes on: hopefully next week’s column will feature lots of good news!
