My worst day in football - Johnson
Date published: 23 December 2013
ATHLETIC boss Lee Johnson admitted Ellis Plummer crumbled under pressure in Saturday’s Colchester game.
The on-loan Manchester City left-back put through his own goal and won’t look back with any pride on the second Colchester strike, either, as the visitors won 2-0 at Boundary Park.
After producing what Johnson felt was a solid show at Brentford seven days earlier, Plummer – whose loan is up at the end of the month – succumbed in a display in which senior players also faltered badly.
“What can you say? He is a young lad who has come in from City. I expect him to be able to cope and he didn’t,” said Johnson.
“I thought he was excellent the previous week at Brentford. He came back in and he went under. It was disappointing to see that.
“But he is young and he will have to learn very quickly, as whatever division you are in there are livelihoods on the line.”
There were harsh words for his team’s overall showing, too, with the manager feeling that his side didn’t do themselves justice against a Us outfit who had been trounced 4-0 at home by Notts County the previous week.
“It was a very, very poor performance and I feel let down,” he added. “There was a lack of desire, of energy and of will to win. We looked young and immature – everything that you would say about a side that was weak mentally and physically came out.”
