ATHLETIC are facing a battle with one Championship outfit and rivals in Sky Bet League One to secure the services of Matteo Lanzoni.

The short-term deal for the Italian defender (25) expired after yesterday’s Coventry clash and he is a free agent.

Manager Lee Johnson wants to keep hold of a player he has described as one of the most dedicated professionals he has ever come across, but concedes it will be difficult.

Lanzoni has been in impressive form during a four-month stint at Boundary Park, attracting the attentions of the flock of scouts regularly at Athletic’s games this term.

“We will have to sit down with him because as of now, he is out of contract,” said Johnson, who had to substitute Lanzoni at half-time in yesterday's 1-1 draw at Coventry due to a hamstring strain.

“I know there are two or three clubs interested in him as well so we will have to see how those chats go.

“It will be tough. I know he wants to stay, but it depends what other clubs are throwing at him.”

On players he would like to bring in once the transfer window reopens in the New Year, Johnson confirmed Burnley full-back Joseph Mills is on his ‘wanted’ list.

And a decision will also need to be made on fringe midfield man Wade Joyce who, like Lanzoni, has seen his current deal at Boundary Park expire.

“We have a list of players we like and who we think would take us forward,” Johnson added.

“It is never easy, because for every one you try to get there are 1,000 phone calls to make.

“Then, with a club like ours, there is always the possibility of being gazumped at any stage.

“We have to work smart and we are trying our hardest to add to the already-good squad we have got.”
