Johnson: I’m the man to lead Latics

MANAGER Lee Johnson believes he is the man to take Athletic forward after the club’s big show of faith in him.

Johnson has been in talks over extending his stay at the club for some time — and yesterday signed a new three and a half year contract, to the summer of 2018.

Johnson (32) said: “I have made mistakes, there is no doubting that. I can understand why some fans would ask why do this now, given the predicament we are in.

“But I believe in the club and players and what we are trying to achieve. I believe I am the man to do it. We kick on with the challenge and we are only at phase one at the moment.

“We are not a million miles away and hopefully this gives the club an added boost of adrenaline going forward, to produce an excellent back end to the season.”

Johnson, who was appointed Paul Dickov’s permanent successor 10 months ago, is gearing for tomorrow’s home game against Peterborough.

With his side only a point above the relegation zone, Johnson is grateful he has the support of the club’s hierarchy.

“I am delighted and very appreciative of the faith the board and chairman have shown in me. It is an extended opportunity at a club I have so far thoroughly enjoyed. There was never a doubt for me. I always wanted to be here.”

Director Barry Owen believes the club has the right man for the job: “We are all aware of where we are in the league at present. We are a good footballing side and we have entertained our fans.

“Lee has learned a great deal in his time here and we intend to enhance that. We have shown our side of the bargain and have full faith in the manager. We want the fans behind us.”
