Danny’s superstrike lit up a bland afternoon

The Latics star writes every week for Chron Sport
IT has been a tough job to write this week’s column; I could have summed the match up against Bristol City in one word – BLAND.
Obviously the weather played a massive part in a game that lacked any real quality other than that opening goal, and no doubt we will have similar conditions in the coming weeks to deal with.
There was a real feelgood factor in the Latics camp in the build-up to the game, after a great away victory against Swindon the previous week.
Unfortunately, the ridiculously strong winds made for a poor game - and possibly an even worse spectacle for the supporters.
I can only think of two positives things: the fantastic strike by Danny Philliskirk, and that we gained something from a match in which we didn’t play well.
Danny’s goal was a beauty: having picked up the ball, he was probably a little fortunate to get a kind ricochet from his touch and turn. But the rest was pure class as he unleashed a blistering shot from 25 yards.
As for not playing well, it’s fair to say we were all below par on the day. But there have been plenty of times this season where we have been the unlucky losers, so it was nice to take something back!
Probably the biggest disappointment was conceding so soon after we got our noses in front. This was the third or fourth time in recent contests that we lost a goal from an opposition corner, and we need to eradicate this problem because it is happening far too often and all too easily.
Looking ahead to tomorrow’s fixture against MK Dons, another former employer of mine and a very good footballing side.
