And then there were two sides . . .

Athletic have taken the step of shutting the large section of the Verlin Stand at the Rochdale Road end of Boundary Park for the Crawley game. Visitors will be housed in the small section.

The idea is to pack fans closer together in the Zen Office stand at the Chaddy End and the George Hill Main Stand. Season-ticket holders in the Verlin Stand will need to relocate.

The club says the move is down to a desire to create a more intense atmosphere.

“Management and players frequently comment on the excellent vocal support we enjoy when visiting other clubs,” Athletic chief executive Neil Joy said..

“We want to try to replicate that as far as we can for the visit of Crawley. It is a big game for the club and we want to encourage everyone to support the team.

“We apologise for the inconvenience for season-ticket holders, but we hope as many fans as possible take the opportunity to generate a great atmosphere.”

Five of Athletic’ remaining matches are at home, where fortunes have been mixed.
