DANNY PHILLISKIRK (centre) . . . remaining upbeat.
MAN of all roles Danny Philliskirk says that one goal could lead to plenty more, as he bids to graft his way back to full scoring form in the most crucial section of the season.
No Athletic player this season can match the 22-year-old’s tally of 11, of which eight have come in knock-out competitions.
But since hitting one in a man-of-the-match display at Mansfield in the the televised FA Cup second-round replay, Philliskirk has found the net only once in 16 appearances.
A knee problem soon after the Field Mill tie didn’t help his cause and operating in a wide midfield role at times has also reduced chances to get into prime scoring positions.
But ahead of the big home game against Crawley on Saturday, Philliskirk remains optimistic.
“I have played a lot of games this season and it has been good. I am just happy to be in and around the squad and I hope to get back to top form soon.
“I believe that if you work hard then you will reap the rewards. I haven’t scored as many goals recently, but you can’t let that be a factor in what you do - keep at it and the chances will come, as they did earlier in the season, when one goal led to two, three and four, when the ball just seemed to fall in good positions.”
“In this division, I know people often say that every game is tough, but it is absolutely true. For us, every game is a cup final. And even if we are not playing so well, the key is to scrape results together.”
After starting 34 times in 2013-14 — compared to four times in his career previously — the forward is determined to repay the faith shown in him.
“I have got to thank the manager and the chairman for getting me here and giving me my opportunity,” he added. “I will do everything I can to get the club out of trouble.
“We still have to play teams around us and that gives us the chance to hurt their chances as well as improve ours. They will be crucial games.”
RHYS Turner boosted his hopes of first-team action with a hat-trick for Athletic’s reserves yesterday in a 4-0 win over Walsall at Chapel Road.
The teenage striker, signed from Stockport in the last transfer window, opened the scoring midway through the first half
