PAIR OF ACES: James Wilson, pictured heading the ball, and his defensive partner Adam Lockwood (right) have been a revelation since being introduced to the Athletic side.
IT IS three hours of play and counting since Athletic last conceded a goal - and manager Lee Johnson has promised there is still more to come from his dominant centre-back pairing of Adam Lockwood and James Wilson.
The duo — with goalkeeper Paul Rachubka and full-backs Connor Brown and Jonathan Grounds — has been outstanding in shutting out the opposition. A run of four clean sheets in the last six matches has helped guide Athletic to the brink of relegation safety.
Lockwood will remain at Boundary Park next season, the manager has confirmed. The 32 year old, who has been playing through the pain barrier recently, triggered a contract clause which earned him a year’s deal after his 13th start for the club at Colchester.
And while Johnson lost talented James Tarkowski this term, he says Wales international Wilson (25) has the potential to reach a high level.
“When we lost James we had to look outside the box a little bit and had to get players who needed to get fitness through playing,” Johnson told the Chronicle.
“The likes of Lockwood and Wilson have been brilliant since they have come in and will only get better.
“‘Locky’ is playing with half a groin at the moment, as well. It is testament to his character. James can be a top player. Sometimes he tries things he isn’t good at but his athleticism comes through and he is calm under pressure. I think he can have a bright future.”
