MICHAEL TIDSER: likely to return to Rotherham.
ATHLETIC hope to bring in three new players in the upcoming transfer window — but manager Lee Johnson accepts having to lose a couple from his existing squad in the process.
With all the loan players other than injured Bolton goalkeeper Paddy Kenny still training with the club until this weekend, there is scope to bring in one new face.
Athletic’s boss has confirmed he wants to keep loan midfield man Daniel Johnson, either on loan or permanently.
A new front man may be sought if Jabo Ibehre’s loan from Colchester isn’t extended, while midfield man Michael Tidser is likely to return to Rotherham. Loan forward Tom Youngs hasn’t featured in the first team during effectively a trial from Bolton.
Johnson would like to move on some of the fringe men on permanent contracts. That would create room for reinforcements as we head into the second half of the season.
“There is no doubt we will have to get a couple out, in order to do much business,” said Athletic’s manager. “There may be room for one more — and if we can get two out, say, then we could get three in.
“It is a case of our being ready to swoop at the right time.”
One player who may be leaving Athletic, possibly permanently, is David Mellor. It remains to be seen if Tranmere Rovers follow up their interest in the 21 year old, who has hardly had a look-in with Athletic. Mellor has an option in his current contract to spend a further year with Athletic, who would be looking for some financial settlement in the event of his departure.
