JAMES Dayton’s proposed move North of the border has hit a snag.

Dayton (26) appeared set for a switch to St Mirren of the Scottish Premiership. But the Chronicle understands there is an issue at the Paisley club’s end.

Johnson will let Dayton go - provided the deal is right for all parties. Dayton’s contract expires at the end of the season.

“It is fair to say there is interest,” Johnson said of the winger, who was the first summer signing of his managerial career.

Meanwhile Athletic have sights trained on a Championship talent currently out of favour with his club.

Johnson is keeping his identity secret but admits a deal is “60-40” in favour of completion before the Notts clash.

Athletic’s shortage of numbers in the squad is a concern for the manager, who would like to bring in three new men.

The shortage of players has seen a still not fully-fit Adam Lockwood appear on the subs bench for the last two games. Johnson admits he would like more guidance on the field in the shape of the

experienced former Doncaster captain.

“He may not be the most mobile, but he is a leader of men. On the pitch, he can help to orchestrate like a manager does, with a good voice and an understanding of the game.”
