Competition for places delights Latics boss

ATHLETIC manager Lee Johnson has expressed his satisfaction with his transfer deadline deals – and the resources now at his disposal.

Johnson reckons competition for places is strong and expects the team to react positively in the push for a place in the Sky Bet League One play-off positions.

On a frenetic Monday, into SportsDirect.com Park came Bolton striker Conor Wilkinson on a season-long loan, while there was also a successful late swoop for Dagenham forward Rhys Murphy.

Out went goalkeeper Paul Rachubka, whose contract was cancelled, while David Mellor joined Halifax on a loan deal until the end of the season.

Johnson is delighted with the depth of Athletic’s squad.

He said: “It gives us options and against Barnsley we tried to give people their chance. They’ve got to take it: that’s what competition is about.

“Goal scorers have got to score, midfielders assist and defenders defend. If not then sorry pal, your mate is coming in for a couple of games.

“People have to be mentally strong enough to deal with having a group of decent players around.”

YEOVIL has sacked manager Gary Johnson – the father of Athletic boss Lee – after three years in charge.

The former Bristol City chief led the Somerset side into the Championship for the first time in their

history, but after relegation last season they now sit four points adrift of safety at the foot of Sky Bet League One.

A club statement confirmed that assistant Terry Skiverton will take over as acting manager.

“The decision to relieve Gary of his management duties is the hardest I have been involved in during my 23 years at Huish Park,” chairman John Fry told the club’s official website.

“We part company on good terms and I would like personally to wish him well for the future.

Johnson’s side has won just five league games this season.
