SHREWSBURY 2, ATHLETIC 0
GOALS from Liam McAlinden and Tyrone Barnett saw Athletic exit the Johnstone's Paint Trophy at the first-round stage.
McAlinden took advantage of a defensive error from Timothee Dieng to race down the left and fire home past David Cornell in the 40th minute.
George Green's well-struck volley took Athletic close to a leveller but four minutes after the break, Barnett added a second after a mistake from captain James Wilson.
And in front of 133 travelling fans, Darren Kelly's side failed to ask enough questions of the home defence as they slid out of the competition, though substitute Rhys Murphy was unlucky not to win a penalty in the second half under Jermaine Grandison's clumsy challenge.
