Evans linked with Posh job

STEVE Evans is the hot favourite to become Peterborough’s next manager.

But it’s unlikely that, even if the Rotherham boss does settle into the London Road job in place of sacked Dave Robertson, the change will happen before the club’s visit to Oldham.

“My focus is on my job at Rotherham so I will not comment on ifs, buts or maybes,” Evans said this week.

The Scot — well known to Athletic fans for his antics on the touchline — lives in nearby Wansford and was linked to the role in the summer before caretaker Robertson was appointed permanently.

It seems likely Robertson’s former assistant Grant McCann will take charge of the side for the Athletic game at the weekend.

“I have been thrown into this situation and I will do everything I can to make it work for the football club,” said McCann. “Obviously, I hope the players respond to me and that we get a couple of good results, because the club needs them.”

Athletic’s assistant manager, Dean Holden, a former Peterborough captain during a two-year stay at London Road, is expecting the visitors to approach the contest with conviction.

“Grant has been around the lads and we know that he will have them really fired up for the game,” said Holden.

“They have probably under-achieved this season and that has cost the manager. That is the way it goes in football sometimes.

“I expect them to be up for it and to be going out to prove a point.”
