RICHIE Wellens could be back in Doncaster’s side to do battle with Athletic — which could mean the former Latics hero pits himself against the club’s new boss, David Dunn, in midfield.
The Keepmoat Stadium meeting on Saturday features two struggling sides who have both recently sacked managers. Rovers dismissed Paul Dickov after a poor run of form, while after a 5-1 home loss to Peterborough put paid to Darren Kelly’s Oldham career.
The two clubs have won only twice in 14 games this season - both against Fleetwood.
But Rovers, managed by defender Rob Jones as a caretaker boss, could use the experience of Wellens (35) to kickstart their campaign.
Wellens tried to move to Wigan tobe closer to home, but the deal fell through and Wellens fell out of favour with Rovers.
After nearly 50 games last season, he hasn’t played since August. He could now return to provide leadership quality.
