ATHLETIC 2, SOUTHEND 5
WRETCHED Athletic fell to a second straight league defeat, as Southend punished defensive woes to inflict yet more damage on home soil.
First-half goals from Jack Payne and David Mooney both came as Athletic failed to clear from set pieces.
David Worrall added another shortly after the interval, before Michael Higdon replied with a low left-footed shot.
Higdon then saw his penalty saved, before netting with a close-range header only a minute later.
But at 3-2 down, and with all the momentum their way, Athletic collapsed again.
First, Will Atkinson bundled in at the far post to add a fourth for Phil Brown's side.
Then, substitute Luke Prosser somehow out-jumped David Cornell from a standing start – again at the far post – to emphasise the weak defence of David Dunn's side.
