THERE is plenty of hard work in store for Athletic to haul themselves out of the mire this season.
But for manager David Dunn, putting his own stamp on the squad in terms of recruitment next month is not simply about the short-term. The 35 year old is determined to lay the foundations for success over a much longer period.
With that in mind, he hopes players whose deals run out next summer can prove themselves worthy of new contracts.
“We haven’t even had one transfer window yet to bring anyone in permanently,” said Dunn, who was this week able to extend the short-term agreement with Mark Yeates up to the end of January.
“A lot of players are out of contract at the end of the season and a lot are playing for deals for next year. Pre-season is a very important part of it and it isn’t just about getting a sweat on.
“It is eight weeks where you are preparing your team and working on everything. Without jumping ahead. I am looking forward to putting a stamp on it.”
