GOAL . . . Carl Winchester
SHREWSBURY 0 ATHLETIC 1
CARL Winchester's first-half goal earned John Sheridan his first three points as Athletic manager.
Athletic impressed in the first half and with new signing Anthony Gerrard keeping things tight at the back, the visitors may have opened the scoring early on when Matt Palmer struck over when well-placed.
Winchester's goal was a clean strike from 22 yards, as he took on a pass and turned on to his left foot before firing firmly home.
Athletic deserved their lead and could have added to it had Dominic Poleon got a firmer header on a Danny Lafferty cross shortly before half-time.
Liam Kelly tested Jayson Leutwiler with a 40-yard drive in a tight second half and though the visitors didn't see too much of the ball at times, Shrewsbury failed to create a real chance despite a couple of late scrambles.
