IT’S THERE: Dominic Poleon turns away to celebrate after equalising against Wigan.
WIGAN Athletic have used their transfer market clout to propel themselves towards automatic promotion back to the Championship.
Gary Caldwell’s side is second in the form table, with four wins and two draws in its last six games and is primed for what could even be a shot at the title.
Wigan’s prospects have been improved by a pair of signings from fellow League One clubs. Chesterfield’s midfield linchpin Sam Morsy and Crewe forward Ryan Colclough both moved to the DW Stadium for undisclosed fees last month.
There was also a new signing on loan, as Conor McAleny made the switch from Everton. The 23 year old was thrown straight into the action too, impressing on his debut in Wigan’s 2-0 win at Sheffield United at the weekend with his side’s second goal.
“I said when he signed that we’d got a player with real quality,” Caldwell said.
“He’s come from a massive club in Everton, and had a few loans at a higher level than this, and he showed his quality.
“I thought his all-round game was superb — the way he drifted in off the flanks and understood our possession game. He’s got a massive role to play.”
Wigan’s unbeaten run in 2016 has coincided with a purple patch in front of goal for ex-Walsall striker Will Grigg, a £900,000 summer signing from Brentford.
He missed a penalty at Bramall Lane, but still has five goals from his last six outings and is riding high on confidence. Cash-strapped Oldham will have to guard against his threat on Saturday.
