A MICHAEL Jacobs free-kick condemned Athletic to their fourth pre-season defeat.

Jacobs, one of a clutch of second-half substitutes for Wigan, broke the deadlock 13 minutes from time at SportsDirect.com Park.

Josh Law went close for Athletic in the opening period when he struck the inside of a post, also from a free-kick.

Fellow home full-back Jamie Reckord forced Jussi Jaaskelainen into a smart save seven minutes before Wigan struck.

However, Athletic were unable to find a way through.
