AN own goal from Leon Barnett handed Athletic a deserved first win of the season at Gigg Lane.
Barnett directed Paul Green's left-flank cross beyond his own goalkeeper via an attempted headed clearance in the seventh minute.
Lee Erwin hit a post in the first half with a low drive that was tipped onto the woodwork superbly by Williams.
Connor Ripley saved well at the feet of Nicky Clark in the second half and Athletic couldn't quite make the most of several promising counter-attacks.
Ryan Flynn going very close but for another fine save from Williams while at the other end, Nicky Clark made a hash of a very good chance as the ball screwed wide off his standing foot.
