GOALS . . . Darius Osei
ATHLETIC 4, CARLISLE 5
A madcap game featuring defensive howlers and moments of magic ended in Carlisle's favour thanks to Michael Raynes' second goal of the game on 89 minutes.
The visitors had gone behind in this first Checkatrade.com Trophy clash when Billy Mckay netted following neat work by debutant Freddie Ladapo in the 16th minute.
Carlisle then netted three times. Raynes bundled home a corner kick, Reggie Lambe shot through goalkeeper Chris Kettings and Cameron Burgess was helpless to prevent Shaun Miller's cut-back from hitting him and diverting into an open goal.
Darius Osei, on as a substitute, got Athletic level. His first on 48 minutes was a neat finish under the goalkeeper and a minute later he slid home Mckay's far-post cross.
Ollie Banks hit a terrific fourth for Athletic on 66 minutes, hammering home from 30 yards after his initial free-kick was blocked.
Carlisle then levelled at 4-4 through Tom Miller after more poor defending from a corner, before Raynes had the final say by turning home another set piece.
There was still time for Osei to be denied a hat-trick by the crossbar, crashing a header in added time against the woodwork.
