Date published: 05 March 2012
GREATER Manchester’s sea, army and air cadets raised £155,086.31 for the Poppy Appeal, 2011 — 17 per cent more than the previous year.
Failsworth Air training Corps is the highest fundraising unit in the county with £12,045.13, followed in third place by Oldham Sea Cadet corps with £7,432.17.
A prestigious ceremony will be held tomorrow at University Barracks in Manchester, when the Lord Lieutenant of Greater Manchester, Col Warren J Smith JP will present awards in recognition of fund-raising efforts.
Greater Manchester community fundraiser for The Royal British Legion, Kevin McGuire, said: “Once again our splendid cadets have worked tirelessly to raise this fantastic total and Greater Manchester has succeeded in raising more than any other county and district.
“Our cadets have done a tremendous amount of collecting and it is only right that they receive due recognition, especially when all too often young people receive a bad press.”
The national Poppy Appeal total currently stands at more than £36 million.
