Labour looks for by-election victory

Date published: 14 June 2012

VOTERS took to the polls today for the Failsworth East by-election. Labour will hope to strengthen its political grip on Oldham Council after the count at Failsworth Town Hall at 10pm.

The ruling party currently has 43 seats after success in May’s local elections with the Lib Dems on 12 and the Conservatives on two.

Standing for Labour is Norman Briggs with Ron Wise for the Liberal Democrats and Carrol Ashton for UKIP. The Tories haven’t fielded a candidate.

The by-election follows the death of Labour councillor Barbara Dawson, who lost her battle with cancer in April. A week later her husband David Dawson battled through his grief to win a seat in the same ward for Labour.
