Oldham Council
A MINUTE’S silence was held last night for Glenys Butterworth, who died suddenly last month.

The former Failsworth councillor was honoured by colleagues who paid moving tributes prior to the moment of reflection.

Council leader Jim McMahon said: “She was a wonderful person and a wonderful friend and we are all Glenys was involved in several campaigns and support groups during her career, and won the hearts of council members during her time as a ward representative.

Councillor Steven Bashforth explained how she often put herself out for colleagues.

“She was a battler who battled for friends. She was one you wanted on your side,” he said.

Glenys lived in the borough for almost 50 years and was first elected to her seat in 2007.

Councillors also paid tribute to former Oldham councillor Ian Hilton, who died earlier this year.

Councillors Glenys Butterworth and Barbara Dawson, who died within months of each other, were both honoured yesterday with a celebration of their civic lives.

Local dignitaries turned out to remember Barbara Dawson and Glenys Butterworth, who served Failsworth until earlier this year. The assembly room now bears a plaque honouring Barbara’s life, while the library bears a tribute to Glenys.
