Steeped in history

Countdown to BAe closure
THE history and the reputation of the plant was a huge draw for Terry Wynne when he was on the hunt for a job 26 years ago.

The Rochdale man (52) quickly found himself part of a huge family and camaraderie when he first walked through the “daunting” Chadderton gates.

The plant — which had a workforce of 3,500 in 1985 — was busy recruiting for the ATP aircraft.

Terry said: “When I joined ATP was being launched and I was involved in the first flight of the passenger plane.

“Being involved in something like that was absolutely tremendous.”

Currently working on the BAE Hawk at Samlesbury, Terry feels honoured to have worked on almost every manufacturing platform in the factory.

Like many he will be unhappy when BAE shut down the Greengate site in a week’s time.

He said: “The place is just steeped in history.

“It is sad and it is sad for many people, especially those leaving the business.

“It’s more of a natural end and a new beginning for me with a new role, albeit a new place, but there will be familiar faces around.”
