IF there’s one thing this horse meat fiasco has brought to mind, it is the total uncertainty over what processed food suppliers put into the food we eat.
Most people enjoy the convenience of supermarkets without understanding the long-term inconvenience of them.
If you buy a pre-packed frozen meal, do you have any idea what you are about to eat? Would the store manager be able to reassure you of the source of the meat in that meal? The likelihood is no.
But if you were to pay a visit to your local butcher, the chances are that not only would he be able to tell you which abattoir the meat came from, but quite possibly even the farm on which it was reared. Yet still we subject ourselves to these potentially damaging health issues.
If it’s not meat, it’s something else. And yet we continue to do this every day to save time and money. As we do we are inadvertently killing the high street in every single town — which in turn is having a monumental affect on the economy.
The high street in the town where I live has over 130 small businesses (yes, I’ve counted them!) and four supermarkets for our convenience.
I wonder what the odds would be on better, fresher, locally sourced deals coming from one of those 130 small businesses as opposed to one of these giant money-making machines?
