David’s robots star at show

ROBOTS will be invading Manchester’s Science and Industry Museum - thanks to their Chadderton-based creator David Buckley.

David (68) will join over 50 hobbyists, inventors and crafters at the Manchester Mini Maker Fair.

The event aims to merge inventiveness and creativity with traditional crafts and skills.

David - who made a walking robot that featured on TV show Tomorrow’s World in the 1980s - is taking his collection of two-legged robots, which range from six inches to 3ft tall and can walk backwards, turn and draw patterns.

Visitors to the museum will be able to see David’s robotic talking head, and ask questions.

David said: “I was inspired by the Enid Blyton book ‘They Ran Away Together’ which I was read as a four year old. It was about a group of toys, including a clockwork man. It made me think I would like to have a go at making robots.

“If I can inspire anyone else to make robots then that would be brilliant. Children are always fascinated by them.”

Manchester Mini-Maker Faire organiser John Beckerson said: “This will be a fun and vibrant event which all ages will enjoy. A healthy curiosity is all we ask you to bring.”
