OLDHAM’S favourite musical sons the Inspiral Carpets continue to enjoy their 2014 resurgence.

The iconic psychedelic garage band has announced a collaboration that will be heard on their eagerly-anticipated first new album in 20 years.

One of the 12 new tracks on the album, “Let You Down”, will feature a spoken element from Salford pop poet John Cooper Clarke.

From guesting with the Arctic Monkeys to appearing on BBC flagship show “Have I Got News For You”, 65-year-old Clarke has also enjoyed a welcome return to the limelight this year.

The Inspirals have been big Clarke fans for years. Guitarist Graham Lambert said: “Our paths haven’t really crossed before, but all of the band have been huge fans of John for a long, long time.

“Once we’d fathomed out that the ‘Let You Down’ track needed a musical break, we quickly thought of trying to get John to include one of his rants.

“In the end it worked out perfectly. His bit sounds great, and John loves the track. He thinks it sounds like his favourite band, the Velvet Underground.”

Keyboard player Clint Boon added: “John was our only choice when we started discussing getting a guest on the track. He immediately accepted our invitation. He recorded his vocal in one take using lyrics he’d written specially. The result is monumental; one of our finest moments.”

The new album — “Inspiral Carpets” - is scheduled for release on on September 29.
