Roughyeds deny move for Smith

ROUGHYEDS have strongly denied they are interested in making a move for Halifax’s former Super League winger Andy Smith.
The 23-year-old former Bradford and Harlequins man was rumoured to be on his way to Oldham after being frozen out of the picture at the National League One club over the past month.
A big, powerful player, Smith is currently the subject of disciplinary action by the West Yorkshire club having failed to turn up since being dropped from the first team.
While that wouldn’t necessarily put Oldham off — coach Steve Deakin has a record of taking on players with difficult pasts — the fact that the club is currently well-set in that position appears to have killed off any chance of striking a deal.
“There is absolutely no truth in it,” said Roughyeds chief executive Chris Hamilton, pointing to the fact that as well as Daryl Cardiss, who returned to the side on Sunday after a lengthy lay-off, Gareth Langley is now free to play after completing a one-match ban.
Another winger, Army man Ben Seru, is set to have a scan later this week on the knee injury which marred his debut appearance for the club a month ago.
The squad trained as normal last night without any new injury problems coming to light.
With a trip to Workington in store this weekend, the players will travel to Cumbria on the Saturday for an overnight stay.
Meanwhile, reserves team forward Phil Jagger was handed a three-match ban after making a personal appearance at the RFL’s disciplinary committee last night.
Jagger was sent off for a head butt in a 22-20 home defeat against Hunslet.
SEASON ticket holders are guaranteed their normal seats for the televised home match against Doncaster on Thursday, July 17 (7.30pm kick off).
The club announced this week that a similar scheme to that used last year will be in action, with entry to the game being free subject to a £1 donation to charity.
The Rochdale Road end will also be open on the night.
