OLDHAM Roughyeds have announced the second signing from last year’s reserves side, with Chris Clarke joining the professional ranks on a two-year deal.

Hopes are high for the scrum-capped 18-year-old, who has also impressed in the Oldham St Anne’s first team over the past couple of seasons.

The high-energy second row forward, who is from Lees, joins Scott Mansfield in the first team squad from next season — though Clarke was concerned that a recent injury may have jeopardised his chances.

“He was a little bit worried as he recently broke his thumb,” said chief executive Chris Hamilton, on an injury sustained in a National Conference League local derby for St Anne’s against Saddleworth Rangers two weeks ago.

“But he is delighted to sign and we are delighted to have him here, as he was one of the most consistent performers in the reserves last year.”

More players from the reserves ranks, coached by John Hough and Leo Casey, are expected to sign up in the coming weeks and talks were held with prospective candidates last night.

As far as this Sunday’s National League Two grand final against Doncaster is concerned, ticket sales are going well for the encounter at Warrington’s Halliwell Jones Stadium (1.30pm kick off).

Oldham have now sold out of the best-priced seat tickets and no more are available from the RFL.

However, there are still plenty of both seated and standing tickets available for purchase from the club offices on Lansdowne Road.

“We want as many people as possible to be there to get behind the lads,” added Mr Hamilton.

“The noise against Rochdale was fantastic, helping create a great atmosphere, and you could see how much it meant to the players.

“We would encourage people to come in and get their tickets as soon as possible.”

No new injuries were reported at training last night, leaving Neil Roden (hamstring) as the principle concern ahead of a game which sees the winners promoted to National League One.
