OLDHAM RUGBY'S Paul Highton models the new retro strip
A new, plain white commemorative Oldham shirt is to be produced in time for Christmas.
The shirt, modelled in the picture by new Roughyeds signing Paul Highton, is a replica of the reserve or alternative version used by many sides in the early days of the Northern Union.
Photographic evidence exists of Oldham RLFC using such a strip as early as 1906 and the trend continued until the 1960s.
The most famous use of the kit as far as Oldham are concerned was for the three consecutive Lancashire Cup victories in the 1950s. Defeating St Helens in both 1956 and 1958 and Wigan in between, the strip — which featured navy shorts — was used in order to prevent a clash with red-and-white opposition.
The same permutation was also adopted for the epic, twice replayed, Challenge Cup semi-final against Hull KR in 1964.
Sizes range from small through to extra extra large and shirts can be ordered on (0161) 620 9583, (01457) 875084 or 07900 260295. The price is £35.
