MARK CASS is to stay on and work under Tony Benson at the Roughyeds next term, the club have confirmed.

The 37-year-old Yorkshireman, formerly head coach at Hunslet, was right-hand man to Steve Deakin last season as Oldham reached the National League Two play-off final.

Now, having spent the past month working closely alongside the new man in charge, Cass has been handed a new one-year contract to once again perform assistant coaching duties.

“Tony had no preconceived ideas about people coming in as his assistant,” said Roughyeds chief executive Chris Hamilton.

“So we thought it would be the best way forward to see if the pair could work together over the past month, as Mark’s old contract came to a close. That process has proven to be a success.”

Cass, whose playing career took in stints at Hull FC, Batley and Hunslet, will now help Benson plot a course to promotion for Oldham in The Co-operative Championship One. He will be working with 18 of the first team players from last season who have since re-signed to the club.

Meanwhile, officials are in the process of organising a series of pre-season friendlies, with one of those games to be a home clash with Super League champions Leeds Rhinos.

ROUGHYEDS fan John Davies (FA/006) has won £500 in the club’s latest Five Alive draw.

Dorothy Johnstone (FA/009) won the second prize of two places in the Boundary Park hospitality suite with pre-match meal at a forthcoming home game, while former Roughyeds player Joe Collins (FA/024) picked up the third prize, a £25 voucher for the club shop.
