FORMER Oldham player Lee Wingfield is set to claim a contract at Leigh.
The hard running second row forward, released by the Roughyeds at the end of last season following difficulties in regularly attending training sessions due to work, played as a trialist for his home-town club in a recent friendly encounter with Salford.
Neil Kelly, coach of Leigh Centurions, appears to have been impressed with the efforts of Wingfield, whose three seasons spent at Oldham were characterised by terrible luck with injuries.
"He is a good professional, who has impressed with his dedication to training," Kelly was quoted as saying in League Express.
"He is on trial at the moment, but we hope to do something about that in the not-too-distant future."
GATESHEAD Thunder have confirmed that coach Dave Woods, the winner of last season's Co-operative National League Two coach of the year award who led to the club to an unexpected championship title, has been sacked due to an undisclosed off-field matter.
The decision was made public following an unsuccessful appeal by Woods against the verdict. The former Castleford coach is now set to take legal action against Gateshead.
A HOST of fresh, talented youngsters from the town turned out for top clubs during the friendly action over the festive period.
Salford gave a run-out to ex-Waterhead starlet Daniel Whitmore during their 26-6 win at Leigh; stand-off Nigel Scott, a former Counthill pupil, started for Warrington in their 44-4 home reverse to a strong Wigan side — who had Mark Flanagan, son of Terry, in the number 11 shirt; and St Helens' Jack Bradbury, who learned his trade at Saddleworth Rangers, came off the bench in a 28-26 home defeat to a more experienced Widnes Vikings.
