Injured Gibbons set to have scan

ROUGHYEDS hooker Stevie Gibbons will undergo a scan on his injured shoulder on Friday.

The Ireland international (25) was hurt on his Oldham debut against Widnes Vikings last month and hasn’t played since.

Coach Tony Benson is hopeful that the scan — which is being done to ensure there is no damage other than that to his AC joint — will show a positive result, meaning that his former charge at London Skolars can step back into the fray within a fortnight.

Second row forward Craig Robinson, currently out after suffering a hyper-extension of his elbow against old club Rochdale, will visit a specialist next week in order to get to the root of the problem.

The only other injury worry affecting Benson was Lee Greenwood, who missed out on Sunday’s win at Hunslet due to having had stitches in his lip. The former Leigh and Halifax winger, who coaches amateur side Siddal in their Carnegie Challenge Cup third-round match at home to Swinton Lions on Saturday at The Shay, will be fit and available for selection for Oldham’s own Challenge Cup game at home to Sharlston.

That match on Sunday is subject to a price cut for fans at Boundary Park (3pm kick off) with adults paying £10 and concessions £5.

With the start of the Roughyeds’ league season just over a week-and-a-half away, the RFL have secured a new three-year sponsorship deal with the Co-operative for the renamed Championship.

Clubs outside Super League will be playing for a prize fund in excess of £200,000, with the champions scooping £100,000 and £50,000 going to the Championship One winners.

Warrington’s Halliwell Jones Stadium is again to be the venue for the play-off finals, with the Co-operative Championship finalists both eligible to apply for a Super League franchise in 2011.

A ‘Buffet and Banter’ afternoon takes place in the sponsors’ suite at Boundary Park for the Sharlston game.

Former Wigan, Bradford and Great Britain player Mike Forshaw is the guest speaker and the £25 ticket cost (£15 for season ticket holders) includes a raffle with the winner getting a new replica shirt, which are on sale now.
