NEW Roughyeds commercial manager Julie Cleave is relishing being involved in the world of rugby league once again.

The 48-year-old worked in a similar capacity for home-town club Warrington between 2002 and 2005 and has since been managing a pub in the town.

Julie, who replaces the departed Mick Bradshaw in the role, started work with Oldham this week and is looking forward to her first game day when Sharlston Rovers visit Boundary Park in the third round of the Challenge Cup.

“I can’t wait for that,” said Julie, who has a background in sales. “It will be fantastic to be back in rugby league and doing the job I love best.

“When the Oldham opportunity arose I was interviewed by (chief executive) Chris Hamilton and I quickly realised it would be the right job for me. The club is ambitious and striving to move forward, and so am I.

“My job will be all about developing contacts and building relationships with people. We need the support of the town and its business community, but partnerships are a two-way thing and I will be keen to make sure that we as a club do all we can to promote the businesses of our sponsors and backers.

“When people in this area get to know me they will soon see that that is how I work.”

Barrow defeated Widnes 12-4 at home last night to secure their place in the last eight of the Northern Rail Cup. The bonus point picked up by the Vikings also ensures that they go through.

Halifax beat visitors Blackpool 50-28 to top pool one, pushing Oldham into second place.

It means that seven clubs — Halifax, Barrow, Widnes, York, Leigh, Featherstone and the Roughyeds — have secured a place in the quarter-finals draw with Dewsbury only needing to avoid a heavy defeat in their final pool two match at London Skolars to join them.

According to the RFL website, the unseeded draw is now to be made at half-time in the Sky Sports televised Halifax v Widnes Co-operative Championship fixture on Thursday, March 19. The last-eight ties will be played out on Sunday, June 7.
