Roughyeds wait for Roberts news

OLDHAM should discover later today the extent of Robert Roberts’ injury.

The Roughyeds captain went for a scan on his problem knee on Friday and officials are waiting to hear the results.

Even if he gets the all-clear from doctors, it is unlikely Roberts will play at York in The Co-op Championship One on Thursday night.

He has missed more than a week’s training and coach Tony Benson may be reluctant to rush him back into the fray so soon.

Thomas Coyle is on course to play at York. The 21-year-old half-back has had a special ankle support fitted which enabled him to train as normal on Saturday.

Marcus St Hilaire (hamstring) and Tommy Goulden (elbow) are also carrying slight knocks, but they, too, have taken part in training and are expected to make the line-up later this week.

Luke Sutton and Wayne Kerr played for the reserves, who lost 54-18 at Whitehaven.

The home side fielded a number of players with first-team experience and had opened up a 38-0 lead by the break.

Oldham dug deep after the restart and put 18 points on the board.
