Roughyeds left seeking sprint finish

RECENT defeats have meant that Oldham’s focus has narrowed in on finishing second in Co-operative Championship One.

It appears to be a three-way tussle between the Roughyeds, Keighley and York, with a number of crunch games involving those sides plus runaway leaders Dewsbury between now and the season’s end.

Having performed with great credit in all-but snatching an unlikely win over the Cougars on Sunday despite playing most of the game with 12 men, an Oldham win at unbeaten Dewsbury would significantly enhance the team’s chances of finishing as runners-up.

“We still want to go there and get three points as we are aiming to get that second spot,” said Roughyeds chief executive Chris Hamilton.

“Dewsbury have still not lost a game and they will see this as a big and important one for them too, so we will go there and give it our best shot.”

The chase for second, remaining fixtures:

Keighley — Dewsbury (H) Thursday, July 30; Workington (A) Sunday, August 9; Rochdale (A) Sunday, August 16; Hunslet (H) Sunday, August 23; London Skolars (A) Friday, August 28.
