Roughyeds step up player search

NOT WELCOME: Chronicle sports reporter Matthew Chambers is refused entry to a meeting of Roughyeds fans.
OLDHAM Roughyeds are working hard to bring in extra numbers ahead of Sunday’s big derby clash, but as yet those efforts have been fruitless.
Coach Tony Benson and chief executive Chris Hamilton have been hitting the phones hard all week and fingers are crossed that something can be done in time for the visit of Hornets RL to Boundary Park, the first of two Co-operative Championship One games in five days.
“A lot of clubs are in the same boat, wanting to bring players in rather than let them go,” said Mr Hamilton.
“We are looking to get a centre in and are still hopeful as it is a problem area, with Tommy Goulden and Chris Baines playing there out of position at the moment.
“One or two irons are in the fire, though whether anything happens in time for this weekend is out of our control.
“Hopefully we will have Marcus St Hilaire back this weekend, which would help that situation.”
St Hilaire, who has an Achilles and calf problem, missed last week’s game along with Paul Reilly, Luke Menzies and Paul Highton.
Reilly (broken nose) is very doubtful to return. Menzies has had the results of the scan on his ankle and is set to wear a special support which should see him back in action in the next two weeks, while Highton’s knee scan showed a foreign body floating in his knee and clarification is being sought as to what it is.
Jamie I’Anson (wrist) and Neil Roden (ankle) are concerns at the moment, with Craig Littler (fractured arm) still at Swinton on a week-to-week loan basis.
Meanwhile, Rugby Oldham have released a statement following what are described as “cordial and productive” talks with Bill Quinn, holder of a 75-per-cent shareholding in Oldham RLFC.
“Rugby Oldham stands ready to assist any party or parties with the best interests of professional rugby in Oldham at heart and will co-operate with all existing or any potential new investors in the club,” it reads.
“To progress matters further, the supporters trust will seek talks with Chris Hamilton, the club’s 25-per cent shareholder and CEO.”
FORMER club chairman Bill Quinn held a meeting with Roughyeds fans at Chadderton FC last night. No other club officials were present and the Chronicle was prevented from covering the event by Quinn.
