Roughyeds round up

THERE will be a reunion of Roughyeds old boys at Waterhead Park this Sunday when they form a squad to compete in the Brian Agard Masters Tournament, starting at 12.30pm.

Organisers are hopeful of a big turn-out and plenty will be going on during the day in order to attract families including a barbecue, an auction of sports memorabilia, a raffle and various stalls.

The 10-team tournament also features sides representing Waterhead, Oldham St Anne’s, Salem Hornets, Hollinwood, East Leeds, Drighlington, Siddal, Brighouse and Gateshead and former Great Britain star Barrie McDermott is among those set to take part.

Among those likely to represent Roughyeds Old Boys, in a squad organised by reserve team coach John Hough, will be Houghie himself plus a lot of players from the new club’s early years.

Leo Casey, Keith Brennan, Neil Flanagan — the club’s first captain — twins Anthony and David Gibbons, Mark Sibson, Craig Diggle, Brian Quinlan, Joe McNicholas and many others are down to play.

“We’ll be turning back the clock and it should be great fun,” said Hough.

“It will be fantastic to meet up with old team mates, throw a ball around again and then retire to the clubhouse to share a few yarns and a few memories.”
