BEN MELLOR has become the second brand new signing to join up with the Roughyeds ahead of the 2010 season.

The 20-year-old prop forward has arrived on a one-year deal from Super League club Warrington Wolves and has already made a good impression on head coach Tony Benson in training.

Mellor, the son of Roughyeds community development manager Sean Mellor, had been with the Wolves since signing up as a professional in 2005 and now teams up with fellow rookie Danny Whitmore as a new boy in the ranks.

“Together with Danny, it is an example of our club being able to take advantage of the quality players that are becoming available as a result of the changes put in place in the Super League academy structure,” explained Roughyeds chairman Chris Hamilton, referring to the decision to make the top flight’s academy competition for under-20s only.

“The good thing is that players arriving with us from these backgrounds come with a wealth of good habits and core skills.

“Ben is full of hunger and keen to do well with us.”

Mellor is the 14th player to be confirmed as a Roughyeds recruit for next year and the first out-and-out prop forward in that number.

Roughyeds officials are expecting the fixtures for the forthcoming season to be released early next week.

Rumours are circulating in the press that the delay in publishing is down to a new club from Wales being admitted to the Co-operative Championship One.
