Roughyeds’ late show clinches win

LATE tries by centre Chris Headen and his winger Eddie Vaughan gave Oldham RL reserves a hard-fought 30-26 win against Halifax at the Whitebank Stadium last night.

The home side trailed 22-18 at half-time and then went 26-18 down before lively halves Jamie Dallimore and Tommy Connick inspired the fight back.

A short ball from Connick sent in the impressive Headen before Roughyeds got their noses in front with the Vaughan try, both improved beautifully by Dallimore off the right-hand touchline.

Other Roughyeds try scorers were Dallimore, winger Lewis Brookes and hooker Scott Mansfield, while Dallimore finished with five goals from five attempts.

Halifax went down to 12 men when substitute forward Chris Sykes was sin-binned for a grapple tackle on Michael Cadd, while Oldham suffered similarly when Dallimore went high in the tackle.

Delighted coach John Hough said: “I don’t think we would have beaten Halifax last year — we didn’t have enough mental toughness — so in terms of developing the squad and improving them it was a very useful exercise.”
